my father, napping, originally uploaded by Susan NYC.
Sometimes I'd go visit my father and he'd be lying on his bed, all snuggly under his blanket or robe, and he'd refuse to move. He seemed to be in a terrible funk. But then on the next visit, he'd be lively and fine.

Now, three years after that picture, I see him behaving the same way.

Hi Susan, I found your blog via discovering your father's "letter to God" on flickr.com.

His story is so compelling and timely for me. My husband and I currently have my mother living with us. She is struggling with a progressive neurological disease that is slowly robbing her of function and is terminal.

Your photographs are so honest and raw. I can't say enough good things about them.

I'm your newest follower.

PS - Are you familiar with Snuggies - those backwards robe things, like blankets with sleeves? I think you dad would love one.

PJ, thank you for your comments. I find it consoling to take photographs when I visit my father. Your mother is a lucky woman to have you and your husband caring for her. There are good support groups for caretakers - I hope you've found some if you're interested.

I've seen the snuggies (on 30 Rock!) but didn't make the connection with my dad. He'd really enjoy one when we sit outside in the spring - great idea. Thanks!
